Annual Physical Q & A

ann
One of the best ways to prevent disease and maintain wellness is by visiting the doctor annually for a routine physical exam. Even if you are feeling fine, an annual physical is an opportunity for the doctor to discover any developing health problems you may not be aware of and start treatment to prevent disease from progressing.

Why is an annual physical important?

A physical allows the doctor to get an idea of your general health status. During this visit, your doctor will ask you about your medical history, family history, lifestyle, and general health concerns. This information will allow the doctor to get a better idea of you as a person and how your health is affecting your day-to-day life.

What can I expect during my annual physical?

During your visit, your doctor will talk to you about your medical history, immunization status, diet, and exercise. The doctor will discuss any ongoing medical problems you have and also focus on health concerns that should be addressed to prevent further disease progression.
Your vital signs will be taken and the doctor will do a physical exam. Based on the findings of this visit, further tests may be needed.

What tests will I need?

Tests will vary depending on your age and your specific medical needs. Testing can include checking cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney function, liver tests, hormone levels, and blood electrolytes. You may also be referred for a colonoscopy, bone scan, mammogram and other preventive measures based on your health needs.
